Understanding Google Privacy
Google's Privacy Policy may seem complex, but it's actually much
simpler than it used to be. In the past, every individual Google service came with its own
separate policy. But in March of 2012, Google
consolidated their Privacy Policy to treat you as a single user across all of their services. Whether you're using Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, or any other Google product, Google applies the same Privacy Policy. This also means that Google may
share information about you between its services.
For example, if you perform a Google search for "dogs," Google might share that information with YouTube. Then, if you were to search YouTube for "pets," videos about dogs would appear higher in the search results. This may sound like a lot of
personal information to share with one company, but it's important to remember that Google only uses this information to improve your search results and other Google services.
Still, you should consider whether you feel comfortable
sharing your information and
online behavior with Google. Though Google is one of the biggest forces on the internet today, there are alternatives that offer similar services (see our list of
resources at the bottom of this page). Almost all of Google's services can be found somewhere else, but they cannot offer the
convenience of a single Google account. Trusting Google with your information may prove to be easier than using a variety of services.
The Google Privacy Center
Google understands that their Privacy Policy raises concerns among many of its users. To address these concerns, Google created a centralized place called the
Privacy Center, where you can go to read Google's
Privacy Policy, watch
videos relating to privacy, and access the
Privacy tools.
To Access the Privacy Center:
- If you're signed in to your account, you can click on your profile picture in the top-right corner of the page and then select Privacy.
- Clicking the account name and selecting Privacy
- The Accounts privacy page will appear. This page allows you to customize the privacy level of your Google+ profile (if you use Google+).
- The Account privacy page
- To access the Privacy Center, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Go to Privacy Center.
- Going to the Privacy Center
- The Privacy Center will appear. From here you can read Google's unified Privacy Policy and access a variety of Privacy tools to help manage the information you share with Google.

You can also click
