Creating a Google Account

[h=3]Introduction

Creating a Google Account is fairly simple. You'll need to provide some basic information like your name, age and location. Once you create and verify your account, you'll be able to use Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google+, and many other services.
In this lesson, we'll show you how to create an account and set up an iGoogle homepage.

Creating a Google Account

Creating an Account

In order to create a Google account, you'll need to enter some information, like your name, birthdate, and location. Creating a Google account will automatically create a Gmail (Google Mail) email address and a Google+ profile, as well. Using Gmail, Google's free email service,or Google+, Google's social network, is completely optional, so don't feel obligated to use these services.
If you have a Gmail address, you already have a Google Account, so you won't need to create an account—you can simply sign in to Google using your Gmail information.

[h=4]To Create a Google Account:
  1. Go to www.google.com.
  2. Click the Sign in button in the top-right corner of the page.

  2. You will now need to enter your information into the form. Type your first name and last name.
  3. Type the Google username you want to use. This will be both your Google Account name and Gmail address. Google checks the availability of the username to make sure that name hasn't already been taken.

  4. Type your desired password. Just like with any online service, it's important to choose a strong password—in other words, one that is difficult for someone to guess. When you type your desired password, Gmail will tell you whether it is strong enough, and if it's not strong enough you can modify it. For more information, check out Passwords: The First Step to Safety in our Internet Safety tutorial.

  6. Optional: If you would like for Google to text you your password if you ever forget it or need to reset it, enter your Mobile phone number. This is not required to sign up for a Google Account.
  7. Optional: If you would like for Google to help keep your account secure by emailing you if there is unusual activity happening with your account, enter an alternate email address in the Other email address box.

Understanding Google Privacy

Introduction

If you use the internet at all, it's a good idea to learn all the facts about Google's privacy settings, which have raised some concerns as Google's growth continues. Google partners with many different websites, and it stores information about your interests and demographics, even if you never use any Google services. All of this information is accessible from the Google Privacy Center, which contains many useful Privacy tools. In this lesson, we'll talk about Google's Privacy Policy, how to to get to the Privacy Center, and how to use its Privacy tools.

Understanding Google Privacy

Google's Privacy Policy may seem complex, but it's actually much simpler than it used to be. In the past, every individual Google service came with its own separate policy. But in March of 2012, Google consolidated their Privacy Policy to treat you as a single user across all of their services. Whether you're using Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, or any other Google product, Google applies the same Privacy Policy. This also means that Google may share information about you between its services.
For example, if you perform a Google search for "dogs," Google might share that information with YouTube. Then, if you were to search YouTube for "pets," videos about dogs would appear higher in the search results. This may sound like a lot of personal information to share with one company, but it's important to remember that Google only uses this information to improve your search results and other Google services.
Still, you should consider whether you feel comfortable sharing your information and online behavior with Google. Though Google is one of the biggest forces on the internet today, there are alternatives that offer similar services (see our list of resources at the bottom of this page). Almost all of Google's services can be found somewhere else, but they cannot offer the convenience of a single Google account. Trusting Google with your information may prove to be easier than using a variety of services.

The Google Privacy Center

Google understands that their Privacy Policy raises concerns among many of its users. To address these concerns, Google created a centralized place called the Privacy Center, where you can go to read Google's Privacy Policy, watch videos relating to privacy, and access the Privacy tools.
To Access the Privacy Center:

  1. If you're signed in to your account, you can click on your profile picture in the top-right corner of the page and then select Privacy.

  2. The Accounts privacy page will appear. This page allows you to customize the privacy level of your Google+ profile (if you use Google+).

Recommended Privacy Tools
Though Google holds a lot of your personal information, they also give you the power to control how much information they can collect. There are many different Privacy tools in the Privacy Center to help you modify your privacy settings. We'll explain how to access the list of Privacy tools and how to use some of the most important tools, including the Ads Preferences Manager, Web History Controls, and Google Dashboard.
Understanding these tools is key to managing your privacy on Google, so it's important to become familiar with the other tools as well. Spend some time learning what each tool does and why it might be helpful to you.
To Access the Privacy Tools:

  1. Click Tools in the Privacy Center.

Ads Preferences Manager
Many websites partner with Google to bring you more relevant ads. In order to do this, Google tries to guess what your interests and demographics (such as age and gender) are, based on sites that you've visited. When you do a Google search or view a webpage, the ads that you see will often use this information to decide which ads to show you. This is meant to benefit both you and the advertiser: you're more likely to see ads for products that you're interested in, and the advertiser knows that the ad is more likely to pay off.
However, not everybody likes targeted ads. If you would like to opt out of targeted ads, or just see what information Google is using to deliver ads to you, you can go to the Ads Preferences Manager.
Your interests and demographics are not stored in your Google Account, but rather in a cookie on your computer. That means you'll get targeted ads even if you're not signed in.
Google does not send information about who you are (such as your name or address) to advertisers without your permission. For more information, you can view Google's Privacy Policy.

To Manage Your Ads Preferences:

  1. Select Ads Preferences Manager from the list of Privacy tools.

It uses this data to provide better search results and recommendations to you. However, if you would prefer that Google not record this information, you can disable your web history.
