یکی از تحولات شبکه در دهه اخیر استقبال گسترده از شبکه های Wireless LAN است.همانطور که می دانید Wireless یک تکنولوژی ارتباطی است که در آن از سیم و کابل خبری نیست. Wireless برای تبادل و جا به جایی اطلاعات و داده ها از امواج رادیویی استفاده می کند و برای اتصال رایانه ها و دستگاه های دیجیتال به یکدیگر کاربرد دارد و سرعت توسعه شبکه را چندین برابر کرده است. به کمک این تکنولوژی می توان از اینترنت به صورت بیسیم بهره برد و این تکنولوژی کاریردهای فراوانی دارد که در ادامه به آن اشاره خواهیم کرد. با استفاده از امکانات Wireless دیگر بدون محدودیت مکانی با استفاده از یک فضای تعریف شده می توانید از امکانات اینترنت به راحتی استفاده کنید. از آنجا که بدون معماری مناسب نمی توان یک شبکه را به بهره وری رساند مطالعه اصول اولیه و پایه ای شبکه بی سیم امری مهم است. برای بهره وری از این سیستم لازم است اطلاعات پایه ای را از ان بدانید.​

4- شبکه های کابلی در مقیاس های بزرگ قابل اجرا نیست برای مثال نمی توان مسافت شهر رشت تا شهر لاهیجان را با کابل شبکه کرد اما با این تکنولوژی این امر به راحتی میسر می شود.
