[h=4]Troubleshooting "Speedy Selecting"
When using the click and drag method to select text, have you

ever selected LOTS of text without meaning to? You've experienced "speedy selecting."

[h=2]Selecting Text

[h=5]What can you do to avoid this frustration?
Use Select All in the Edit menu.OR

Use the Shift Key:

Click once at the starting point of the text you desire to be selected.

Then, hold down the Shift key while clicking again at the ending point of the text you desire to be selected

The text in between those two points should be selected.

Keep in mind that when text is selected, pressing any key deletes

it. The Undo button often comes in handy for this common mistake

Use the backspace and delete keys to erase text in your document.

  • The backspace key erases the text to the left of the insertion point one character at a time.
  • The delete key (located under the Insert key) erases the text to the right of the insertion point.

[h=3]Undo
The Undo feature lets you delete the last change made to your

document. As you can imagine, this is a very handy feature. If you

suddenly make a change or mistake that you do not want or did not mean to do, you can simply "undo" your action

Word remembers up to 300 actions in a document and allows you to undo any or all of them as long as you haven't closed the document first.

OR

Undo all your recent actions by repeatedly clicking the Undo button located on the Standard toolbar.

Notice the small list arrow next to the Undo button. When you click on it, you see a

list of all the separate actions you have performed on the document you are

working on. You can select as many actions as you want to undo

IMPORTANT: You cannot choose to undo one action in the middle of

the list. If you want to undo something you did several steps back, you

will have to undo everything you did after that action

lesson_arrow.gif
If you only want to undo one action in the middle of

your document, highlight it and delete it, or type the corrected text over it

[h=2]Insert vs. Overtype Mode

[h=3]Introduction
[h=4]By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

Use insert and overtype modes

[h=2]Insert vs. Overtype Mode

[h=3]Insert vs. Overtype Mode
Usually you edit a document using Insert mode. This means that text to

the right of the insertion point moves to the right as you type new text. Insert mode adds text, but does not erase anything

Press the Insert key (located to the right of the Backspace Key)

once; you can change your computer to Overtype mode

When your computer is in Overtype mode, text you type

replaces
any existing text to the right of the insertion point and erase it

You can tell which mode you are in by looking at the Status bar at the bottom of the screen.

[h=2]Insert vs. Overtype Mode

[h=3]Helpful Tips
Insert mode is the default mode for editing in Word. It is useful for

adding and changing words. It is also the most flexible, since it does not

erase existing text. Insert mode is recommended for most editing

Overtype mode is useful when replacing a word or series

of words. It is particularly useful when you want to change the ending of a sentence

lesson_arrow.gif
Be careful, you can easily type over text you want to keep.

lesson_check.gif
Remember, if you find yourself in overtype mode and start to panic, simply press the Insert key.

In this lesson, you will learn to Cut and Paste, Copy and Paste, and

Drag and Drop. These features allow you to move a block of text

(a word, sentence, paragraph, page, document, or graphic) within a

document or to another document

Now that you are getting more familiar with the

Standard toolbar, you may have wondered what these keys represented:
