Strong winds caused lampposts to sway violently with the so-called “vortex shedding” caused by winds hitting metal with a particular speed and frequency.
Stormy low pressure systems from the Atlantic will collide with Arctic air to trigger blizzards and heavy snowfall with several inches possible in parts.
Chris Burton, forecaster for The Weather Network, said: “The cold conditions are set to continue through the weekend and into next week as northerly winds drag air straight down from the Arctic.
“There is the risk of low pressure pushing into western areas on Tuesday and as this interacts with cold air there could be more widespread snow in these areas.”
The worsening weather is being blamed on the erratic jet stream which is about to take another southwards plunge over the UK.
It will leave the country open to the fury of the North Pole triggering a freak “displaced Polar vortex” weather pattern.
She said: “Temperatures are going to dip and winds will pick up again, from Saturday everywhere will be in the Arctic air flow.
